Excessive use of tablets and smartphones causes myopia in children

In myopia, not only a hereditary factor influences. Maximum time of exposure to this type of technological elements is half an hour, with pauses of 15 minutes to relax the viewer.

Cases of myopia, astigmatism and other eye problems affect even 3-year-old children, due to the excessive use of technological devices such as tablets or smartphones, experts from the Ministry of Health warned.

Dr. Harvy Honorio, the coordinator of the National Health Strategy for Ocular Health and Prevention of Blindness of Minsa, said that while these visual ills are genetic, exposure for a long time to the lighting of electronic devices increases the possibility of suffering from them. more intensity.

"Myopia, astigmatism and other refractory errors occur in children between 6 and 11 years old. However, now, with the damage that technological gadgets produce, we see children under 3 years diagnosed with these problems, which a couple of years ago was very rare, "he explained.

Honorio explained that the first vision problems that are presented by the use of tablets, laptops and the like are dryness and burning eyes, a persistent tearing, and headaches.

"When these situations are constant and we have minors who already wear glasses, their measurements and therefore the thickness of the moons of their glasses can double in a few months."

The specialist indicated that in extreme cases, which involve other factors such as sedentary lifestyle, overweight or diabetes, it results in a visual disability that can not be corrected easily, and even in cases of blindness.

For the doctor, the maximum exposure time of the minors to this type of technological elements is half an hour, with pauses of 15 minutes to relax the viewer.

"Every 15 minutes children, and people, in general, should blink and 'play with their eyes', looking in various directions, as this serves to lubricate and relax the look," he explained.

On the other hand, he said that children should be screened for this type of ailments at least once a year, especially before school begins.

He reported that there are 50,000 schoolchildren throughout the country, between 6 and 11 years old, that require the permanent use of glasses. The situation worsens, according to the specialist, because many children avoid using glasses to avoid being victims of bullying.

"We recommend that parents and teachers seek psychological counseling in order to let their children know that the use of glasses is a necessary action in order to avoid major problems in the future. And of course knowing how to deal with cases of mockery in schools, since the goal should be to serve both the victim and the one that generates conflicts, "he concluded.
